Safety comes first
- Carbon monoxide kills. Run a gas or propane generator outdoors only, at least 20 feet from your home, away from windows, doors and vents. Never run one in a home, garage, basement, shed or covered porch, even with the door open.
- Put battery-powered or battery-backup CO alarms on every level of your home, and test them.
- Never plug a generator into a wall outlet. Connecting to your home's wiring needs a transfer switch or interlock installed by a licensed electrician.
- If you depend on medical equipment, ask your doctor or equipment supplier for an outage plan and keep a backup.
- Always follow your product's owner's manual. If this site and the manual disagree, the manual wins.
